AMERICA'S INVOLVEMENT IN THE WAR

On June 25 of 1950, North Korean People's Army (NKPA) invaded the Republic of Korea (ROK). Then on July 5 of 1950, The first ground combat takes place in Korea when the the first Americans are killed in this war. Since we supported South Korea or the Republic of Korea, we were against the Chinese People's Volunteer Army (CPVA) and North Korean People's Army (NKPA). The CPVA first attacked our Eighth Army November first of 1950. The 8th Calvarly became trapped and their 3rd Battalioin was demolished by the CPVA on November 6th. The next year on April 11th, President Truman relieves General MacArthur and MacArthur gives his speech "Old Soldiers Never Die." Later on in June, the Army releases a Special Forces unit in 1952. During March of 1953, the CPVA attacked the 7th Infantry Division troops on Pork Chop Hill resulting in the start of a see-saw battle lasting four months. May 25 we launched a Mk 19 atomic artillery shell from a cannon named "Atomic Annie." Finally on July 27th of 1953, the Korean armistice agreement takes effect but not everything is over. On August 5th that same year, we go to Panmunjon to exchange prisoners of war or "Operation Big Switch." 13,444 U.N. prisoners were returned and 389 known American prisoners were not returned.
