GENERAL DOUGLAS MACARTHUR

From the beginning, MacArthur was a good student and excelled as an officer is the Army. 1930-1935, Douglas worked as Chief of Staff and tried to eliminate as many deficiencies that were around during the depression era. In 1937 he retired from the Army but went active duty as of 1941 and became Supreme Commander in the Pacific during WWII. During the Korean Conflict, MacArthur was the commander of the United Nations Command Far East. He was responsible for reconstructing and reforming Japan. He was successfull on the Inchon invasion where he landed to cut lines of communication of the North Korean Army. Although he was a great leader, he lacked honesty and respect for those of higher rank. This resulted in his relief and departure from the Army for the last time.

HARRY TRUMAN

During the Korean Conflict, Harry Truman was president. He had a past of field artillery captain during WWII. He was the president who decided to drop the bombs on Imperial Japan which killed over 20,000 people and ended WWII. During the Korean Conflict, a topic came up of dropping another bomb which was immedietly refused. He gave MacArthur the title of Commander Far East and dropped troops off in Korea to fight. He wanted to stop communism and feared the "Domino Theory" of how when one country turns more will follow. HE said "If we don't put up a fight now who knows what they'll do." But congress soon became angry and frustrated as to see the war was still not over and talk of impeaching President Truman came up.


DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER

Starting as an infantry officer in WWII, he slowly progressed to Supreme Commander of the Allied Expeditionary Forces in Western Europe. He was Chief of Staff of the Army in 1945 to 1947 and later retired from active duty in 1948. In 1950 he became Supreme Allied Commander of NATO. He didn't play the most popular role during the Korean Conflict, but made a big differences as he tried making agreements. He was the nations first great alliance commander who then later became the 34th president.

SYNGMAN RHEE

Syngman Rhee was born in Korea and became President of South Korea in 1948. On June of 1950, North Korea attacked South Korea and captured the capital Seoul. The United Nations came in and tried to help South Korea and Rhee retake the country and keep it free from communism. Rhee constantly bothered the United Nations with thoughts of retaking North Korea's land and was against any agreements the United States was trying to make with China. In July of 1953, the armistice was signed but Rhee refused to sign. As president, he was later overthrown and found hiding in Hawaii where he stayed until his death.

KIM II SUNG

During the Korean War, Kim II Sung held the position of dictator of North Korea. He wanted to bring together North and South Korea to be one under his communist rule. In 1953 he gave in and signed the armistice and continued to lead North Korea for 40 years. During those years North Korea fell deep into poverty and authoritarianism.
